From majestic cliffs and native birds to cascading waterfalls and vibrant marine life, the island of Kauai truly lives up to its moniker, “The Island of Discovery.” Since so much of the natural beauty is only accessible by the sea, there is no better way to discover all that Kauai has to offer than by paddling a kayak through Hanalei’s peaceful waters.

Experienced guides will lead guests down the Hanalei River where you can glimpse rare birds like the koloa (Hawaiian ducks) and nene (Hawaiian geese) against the dramatic backdrop of rugged cliffs, lush green fields and waterfalls that surround the river. Near the mouth of the river, kayakers can enjoy a magnificent view of Makana, the mountain made famous as the Bali Hai in the movie South Pacific. The group will then kayak out into the calm waters of the Hanalei Bay Reef Lagoon where you are invited to snorkel with the myriad of aquatic creatures that call these waters home. Aside from the colorful fish flitting through the reef, guests may likely witness pods of spinner dolphins playing in the surf. Kauai’s waters are also a favorite spot for the Hawaiian green sea turtle, whose curious habit of basking on the beach only happens on the most northwestern islands.   

Refreshments will be served on the pristine white sand beach at Puupoa and paddlers will have ample time to swim, snorkel or explore the shoreline of Hanalei Bay. More adventurous kayakers may also choose to try their paddling skills in the famed Hanalei surf before the group retraces the route back upriver.
