You don’t want just any surfing instructor, you want the best—one who’s taught more than 30,000 beginning surf students including Jimmy Buffett and Emilio Estevez—one who’s surfed all around the world, and whose gift for teaching is known far and wide.

After years of globetrotting, sailing and backpacking all over the world, Tim Sherer founded the Goofy Foot Surf School in Maui in 1994. There, he has schooled his instructors in his particular, and particularly effective, method of surfing instruction. He believes in all-the-time, all-around awareness, both on the board and off. His patience and positive attitude will turn you from aggro to awesome as you learn the ways of the waves.

You’ll start out on the beach, learning warm-up stretches and techniques—how to stand up on the board and stay that way, how to navigate the waves, even how to wipe out. Then you’ll move to the flat waters, then to the warm waves out by the Lahaina Breakwall. Tim will be with you all the way—he believes in coaching from the board, rather than standing in the water, so he’ll never be far away as you navigate your first waves, or hone the surfing skills you already have.
