One of the most popular attractions in Hawaii, the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is dedicated to protecting the fragile marine life of the bay. Before 1990, more than three million visitors came to this area annually. Realizing that something needed to be done to preserve Hanauma Bay, the city and county of Honolulu took steps to restore Hanauma Bay by lowering the number of visitors allowed and establishing an education program that would promote a healthy future for the bay. In 2002, they opened Marine Education Center, a site where the education program flourishes. All visitors to the bay are shown a brief film that gives geological and historical background of the bay and also encourages them to be good stewards of Hanauma and other living reef environments. You’ll enjoy the clear, tropical water as you snorkel, encountering exotic fish and other marine life. You may even spot dolphins and turtles in these popular waters.

This is the ideal spot for snorkeling. The slow decline from zero to thirteen feet is great for children and more casual snorkelers. The outside reef area drops to over thirty feet and provides more advanced snorkelers with an exciting challenge.
