Kauaipoipu
The small city of Poipu is a wonderfully-planned and quiet resort area. This is the place to go for tranquility and high-end luxury hotels, condos, golf courses, tennis courts and restaurants. On Poipu, you will find excellent water sports and activities, with everything from snorkeling to helicopter tours. In fact, the city is known for its fantastic tours and activities, including kayaking, mountain biking, and sailing. On top of the luxurious resorts and hotels, Poipu boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country. It is a true paradise for pleasure seekers and water enthusiasts from all over the world.
The Poipu Beach is, in fact, two beaches separated by a stretch of sandbar. On one of the beaches you will find a shallow and clear beach that is great for the entire family, and on the other one you will find more water sports enthusiasts like surfers and snorkelers. The beach brings visitors, tourists, and locals but you will never see the crowds you see on the Oahu beaches. If you are interested in learning how to surf, Poipu Beach offers several tour companies that will allow you to try out their waves with expert instructors.
Aside from the gorgeous beach and the excellent activities, what you will find in Poipu is an expertly constructed city with streets lined with beautiful and exotic eucalyptus trees such as Maluhia Road, the main thoroughfare into Poipu. The main draw in Poipu are the majestic resorts and condos including national names like the Grand Hyatt and the Sheraton. You can find less expensive but still luxurious options in the Kiahuna Plantation Resort with 35 acres of beautiful tropical gardens or the Hideaway Cove Villas with its comfortable and casually designed room interiors. For even less expensive accommodation options, try the Bamboo Jungle (an old converted plantation house), the Kauai Banyan (with beautiful views from each room), or the Marjorie's Kauai Inn (located between the beach and the historic old town).
Some of the most popular places to visit in Poipu include the 10-mile Koloa Heritage Trail which is a historical trail that can be accessed by foot or by car. You can also check out the gorgeous 35-acre botanical gardens, the Moir Gardens, created in the 1930's by Alexandra Moir, wife to the manager of the prosperous Koloa Plantation. At the Moir Gardens, you will find rare and exotic cactus, bromeliads, orchids and water lilies. You should also take your camera over to Spouting Horn, which is a lava tube that spurts out all kinds of vsalty stuff up in the air up to 50 feet (kind of like a geyser). It is absolutely gorgeous, particularly at sunset.
In Poipu you will find plenty of excellent restaurants. For an expensive but delicious meal of regional Hawaiian cuisine, try out The Beach House where you will be able to choose dishes from a rotating menu and delicious cocktails. Casa Blanca at Kiahuna serves excellent Mediterranean food cooked by the expert Elizabeth Foley, who is also the owner of the restaurant. For more casual dining settings, try the Brick Oven Pizza, which has been in Poipu for over 30 years. For delicious coffee concoctions and great inexpensive meals, try Kalaheo Coffee Co. & Cafe.
